Airlie Castle

Airlie Castle

Steeped in history, Airlie Castle makes a dramatic and comfortable venue for short breaks, family gatherings, marquee parties or weddings. It has been in the Earl of Airlie's family ownership since the 12th century and prides itself on its scenery. There are numerous golf courses within striking distance of the castle. Airlie Castle is a 10 minute drive from Kirriemuir, known as ‘The Gateway to the Glens’ and well served by local airports, 40 minutes from Dundee and 90 minutes from Edinburgh and Aberdeen. With well laid out gardens, Airlie Castle today makes an ideal base for that unique event. The A90 dual carriageway is easily reached from Kirriemuir. Dundee and Perth have a mainline railway station with regular services to the north and south, including a sleeper service.

Airlie Castle is situated in its own grounds of approximately 10 acres and is approached through the main gated lodge entrance to the Estate. The tree lined drive winds its way passed the walled garden where ample parking and turning area await.

Airlie Castle has accommodation for 14 plus an additional 4 in the adjoining cottage which may be suitable for staff, however it is ideally suited to parties of between 14 - 16.

Downiepark House

Downie Park House

Sleeps 16 (+3)

Carnoustie 21 miles

When you first catch of Downie Park as you drive up the lovely tree lined drive, it will catch your breath. It is, quite simply, a beautiful building in a stunning location. Part of the Cortachy and Airlie Estates, the house sits at the foot of the Angus Glens surrounded by hills, woodland and farmland and looks down to the River South Esk well known for its salmon. There are endless beautiful walks throughout the estate and on the hills and moors above.

Downie is an imposing house from the huge stone flagged and pillared hall with its 3 story hanging staircase, to the beautifully light and spacious oval rooms that are a feature. All the rooms are full of light and space with gorgeous views of garden or countryside.

The house has been newly refurbished in an eclectic and unusual style and offers a deliciously quirky presentation with fine fabrics, antiques mixing with more industrial and modern pieces. The oval bedroom has absolutely gorgeous hand painted walls that will entrance. Fine white cotton bed linen is ready to slip in to at the end of a day. There is one en suite bedroom on the lower ground floor which would work well as overflow accommodation, or useful for less mobile guests or a cook.

The bathrooms all have the original deep clawfoot baths – deep and long they are a comforting way to relax at the end of a day outside. There are two drawing rooms with open fires – one with TV so an easy break out space is there for those who want a quiet moment. A high ceilinged formal dining room complete with open fire is ready to host some marvellous evenings. As with so many old houses, the kitchen is in the lower ground floor and thoughtfully, there is plenty of dining space here too with a breakfast room and a kitchen table.

This is a hidden and beautiful spot, perfect for weddings and celebrations or for fishing parties. Fine golf courses such as Carnoustie or Rosemount are close by and the nearby Angus coast has many unspoilt beaches. Edinburgh is within an hour or so and nearby cities like Perth or Dundee with the stunning V&A museum are easy days out.

An unusual and unforgettable house with a great history that you will always remember.
