Airlie Castle
Keeping a fifteenth century Scottish castle in the family hasn’t been easy. Airlie, as we have called the pink sandstone structure since 1432, was not built by my family – it was bought, presumably for its fine defensive position, though that did not stop the Earl of Argyll from burning the place to the ground almost two centuries later, during the Bishops’ Wars. There’s a famous ballad, “The Bonnie Hoose o’ Airlie,” that recalls the terrible event and “the smoke and flames so high.” In 1746 another disaster arrived on the heels of the Jacobite Rebellion, when King George II confiscated what was left of the charred family seat. It wasn’t until half a century later that the then Lord Airlie was allowed to return from exile in Versailles. With a retinue of French masons, according to family lore, he whimsically added a Georgian country house to the castle’s remains. The next significant improvement wasn’t made until late 1800’s, when Blanche Airlie, my great-great grandmother, decided to transform what was essentially a walled vegetable patch into an elaborate topiary garden. But all this bloody history seems to pale next to the task that I have inherited, which is to restore this family jewel to its former glory’. An extract from David Ogilvy in Vogue magazine.
The castle today makes an ideal place for a family re-union, sporting break or to celebrate Christmas or Hogmanay in style. It is very much a family home and children are welcome.
